Toyota Safety Sense Explained

Toyota aims to create a world without accidents and to get there, the manufacturer has developed a safety suite called Toyota Safety Sense, or TSS. Here is an overview of its features, standard on almost all of the brand's models.

In the TSS-C suite, the pre-collision system issues an alert when it detects a risk of a frontal collision. If the driver does not react, the brakes will be automatically applied to avoid or mitigate a collision. TSS-P is the more advanced suite and adds pedestrian detection to the pre-collision system.

Other features include lane departure alert, which will alert the driver if the vehicle deviates from its path, while TSS-P includes steering assistance to keep the vehicle in its lane. The automatic high beams turn on and off without driver intervention to improve the visibility of the roadway at night, without blinding other road users.

In the TSS-P suite, we also get a dynamic cruise control which, using a radar, maintains a safe distance between our vehicle and the one in front of us when cruise control is activated.

The latest generation of the system, named TSS 2.0, includes all the functionality of TSS-P but also benefits from a pre-collision system with cyclist detection during the day and pedestrians in low-light conditions, steering assistance with corner assistance, and advanced dynamic cruise control, which can immobilize and re-accelerate the vehicle in traffic.
